A Few Minutes with Mark Consuelos

You would think that Mark Consuelos would have a problem being called “Mr. Kelly Ripa”, but he is secure enough in his manhood to proudly tell you that he would rather be happy, than right.

Born in Zaragoza, Spain, this handsome actor got his big break on the long running soap opera “All My Children”. It was in the legendary town of Pine Valley that Mark met, fell in love with and married Kelly Ripa, all at Soap Opera speed. Eleven years later, their marriage is still going strong and so are their careers. Not only do Mark and Kelly juggle three kids, talk shows, soaps, reality series, movies and more, but they manage to have a celebrity marriage that defies the odds of Hollywood.

I caught up with Mark and got the chance to peek into the life of this multi-talented man. I learned what it was like for Mark to host a reality show, the secret to a successful marriage, what he’s doing now and why being happy is better than being right.

HG: Alright Mark, let’s jump right into it, what is the secret to a successful marriage?

MC: (Laughs) Ohhh, it’s whether you want to be right or happy. You’ve got to compromise on what’s right…and SHE’S always right.

HG: At what point do you give up on compromising about who is right?

MC: When you say, “I do.” I think my wife (Kelly Ripa) would say, “back away, lightning is going to strike him, because he’s lying.” But I think you hit your head against the same wall so many times, that it’s just easier to give in.

HG: What did you do on your first date with Kelly to make sure there would be a second?

MC: Wow! Um, I picked up the check, that was the first thing I knew I had to do. I brushed my teeth! Other than that, I don’t remember exactly what it was. I put on my best gentleman, opened a lot of doors and held her chair. I still try to do that stuff, which goes a long way.

HG: If Kelly was 10-15 years older when you met her, would that change things up in your relationship?

MC: That’s a great question! She IS a little bit older than me so absolutely not, I don’t think it would change anything. I’ve been married 11 years and the one thing I’ve learned is how to answer questions like this! (Laughs) It absolutely would not change a thing, I probably would have been a little hotter for her!

HG: That leads me to my next question about the reality series you hosted for NBC called “Age of Love” where tennis star Mark Philippoussis, 30, was set up with women in their 20’s (kittens) and women in their 40’s (cougars). Did this reality series remind you of the drama on “All My Children”?

MC: (Laughs) I don’t think you can write the stuff that happened on the show! It was so good, I loved watching the conversations and reactions between the two groups of women and our bachelor, and it was amazing. They simply could not write this stuff!

HG: Do you think the “Age of Love” bachelor and tennis star, Mark Philippoussis, really fell in love?

MC: I don’t know, but you know what I loved about him is that he is a stand up guy. He went into this thing with an opened mind and made very levelheaded decisions. He’s kind of a “throw back”, an old-fashioned guy. He was really looking to find someone, which I respect. He wasn’t one of those guys who was going to kiss every girl in the jacuzzi.

HG: Was it difficult switching from a scripted drama to hosting a show?

MC: I had some concerns about it, I’ve never really done anything like that before. But from day one, I jumped into it and it was fascinating! I fell in love with it and basically the directors would have to tell me to go home. But I wanted to stay and see what was going to happen!

HG: Do you have any movies or shows planned for the future?

MC: I am actually shooting a film for the Oxygen network called “Husband For Hire”. It sounds like a reality show and it could be, but it’s not!

With the support of a good woman (and the realization that we are usually right), Mark Consuelos is set for a successful career and marriage!
